Getbhavcopy: Free NSE and BSE data downloader

Getbhavcopy Options

This page list the various settings available in the Options Tab of Getbhavcopy and how they impact the functionality of the data downloaded using Getbhavcopy.

Global Options

  • Ignore Weekend
If this checkbox is checked, then Getbhavcopy does not download data for Saturday and Sunday (since Indian Stock markets are closed on weekends). This helps in avoiding a "404 Not found" error getting generated for weekends in case you are downloading data for a range of dates which include a weekend.

However, there are a few instances where there can be trading on a weekend (Diwali Muhurat trading can be on a weekend). If you want to download data for such 'one of' weekend days then you can uncheck this checkbox and download the data for that day.

By default this should always be checked.

NSE Options

  • Download NSE data
If this check box is selected then NSE data will be downloaded. If this is unchecked NSE data will not be downloaded.
I recommend you keep this checked if you plan to download EOD data for National Stock Exchange (NSE), India.
  • Enable Output header
If this check box is selected then the NSE data file generated will have the following header as the first line of the NSE data file generated
<ticker>, <date>, <open>, <high>, <low>, <close>, <vol>, <o/i>
If you will be importing the downloaded data to Metastock then it does not make any difference if you keep this checked or unchecked.
However if you are importing the data to Amibroker then the value of this check box will influence the value of $SKIPLINES setting in the Getbhavcopy.Format file you will create for the Getbhavcopy data file.
  • Download Directory
The National Stock Exchange, India (NSE) data download directory.
Use the select button and browse to the directory of your choice where you want to download data. I recommend having different download directories for BSE and NSE.
As an example for this documentation, we will select "C:\Getbhavcopy\NSE" as the download directory.
  • Series Filter
This is a slash separated "/" list of the series for which the data will be available in the output file of Getbhavcopy.
Following is the list of series for different securities listed on NSE, India:
In case you want to download data for series other than "EQ" or "BE", then do not mix other series with "EQ/BE". Download data for those series separately. Once done then change the value back to "EQ/BE" again.
e.g. If you want to download data for L1 and L2 series then set Series Filter to "L1/L2" and then download data. Change the series filter back to "EQ/BE". However note that the data file get overwritten in each case.
Unless you exactly understand what this does, I suggest you keep it as "EQ/BE".
  •  Download Open Interest (Total Deliverable Quantity for Equity Stocks)
If you want to download the 'Total Deliverable Quantity' for Equity stock then select this option. The data will be downloaded as Open Interest value for Metastock.

Enable this only if your technical analysis software supports this and you understand what you are doing otherwise keep it disabled.

BSE Options

  • Download BSE Data
If this check box is selected then BSE data will be downloaded. If this is unchecked BSE data will not be downloaded.

I recommend you keep this checked if you plan to download data for Bombay Stock Exchange, India (BSE).
  • Enable Output header
If this checkbox is selected then the BSE data file generated will have the following header as the first line of the BSE data file generated
<ticker>, <date>, <open>, <high>, <low>, <close>, <vol>, <o/i>
If you are importing the downloaded BSE data to Metastock then this checkbox should be selected or else you may get the 'Enter Ticker Symbol' message while importing the data.
However if you are importing the data to Amibroker then the value of this check box will influence the value of $SKIPLINES setting in the Getbhavcopy.Format file you will create for the Getbhavcopy data file.
  • Download Directory
The Bombay Stock Exchange, India (BSE) data download directory.
Use the select button and browse to the directory of your choice where you want to download data. I recommend having different download directories for BSE and NSE.
As an example for this documentation, we will select "C:\Getbhavcopy\BSE" as the download directory.
